My family and I made Fernie home in 2009. We chose this idyllic town for its positive energy, exhilarating outdoor life, and unparalleled beauty. I wake up smiling every morning, inspired by the possibilities in front of me. All I need is a mountain bike, cross-country skis, wool sweaters for the kids perched in the “chariot” and we are free. Why Fernie? It was love at first sight.
When we began to meet the people that make this town iconic, we threw down roots happily. Call them salt-of-earth, hard-working, fearless adventurers and you will have described each welcoming face we befriended in the first days in our new town. Many Fernie residents have migrated from another home, beyond the mountains. I, like so many of you, have embraced the spirit of Fernie and am inspired daily by creating a life I am in love with; a life I share with a charming community.
If you are wondering, I first gained insight into the lifeblood of Fernie working as a Recruiter for Teck. It honed my understanding of the local economy, instilled time management skills, and built friendships to last a lifetime. I grew up on Vancouver Island in Campbell River, a town built on natural resources by hardworking families who take their responsibility and their recreation seriously. Sound familiar? Akin to Fernie, Campbell River brings out the best in those who embrace what it has to offer. It is this foundation that built my character, my ethics, and my resilience. Yet, it is in Fernie that I truly found my place and took my stride.
